The module will focus on the cultural practices and technologies of urbanity modernity and investigate how these are represented in and engender the stylistic, structural and linguistic features of literary modernism. The primary texts studied will be modernist novels and poetry (1890 - 1930) with a focus on topoi such as the motorcar, the café, and the cinema. An important element of the module is the study of critical and cultural theory on the city in modernism. Students will be asked to appraise texts which engage with these theoretical approaches and concerns. Students will be required to study and research a topos/individual author in depth, focusing on characteristic literary styles and preoccupations, as well as engage with relevant theory.
