The module introduces the key concepts of forensic biology including some of the biological indicators found in forensic science. In this way it provides background knowledge for future modules. It also reviews the role of wildlife in crime, both as victims and witnesses. This includes the illicit trade in endangered species and derivatives (now the world's principal source of illicit income next to the trade in illegal drugs) and how such and activities are detected. It also considers plants and animals as evidence to time and location of crimes and as agents of crime themselves. A field course in Portugal will practically assess the theory covered in the lectures. The module will also introduce the role of wildlife in crime and plants and animals as evidence to time and location of crimes and as agents of crime themselves.
