DESCRIPTION
This course provides the students with an introduction to Western Art from classical antiquity to the nineteenth century as illustrated in the many museums and art collections of London. It will teach the basic principles of art historical analysis through the active study of artworks and their contexts. Issues such as politics, patronage, gender, religion and taste will be examined as well as the ways these interrelate to create specific thematic choices.
This course is largely taught onsite and students will have the opportunity to engage first hand with great masterpieces of sculpture and painting while acquiring the skills to decode their hidden meanings.
Classes are organized chronologically and thematically in order to fully understand artistic developments in the light of history. Personal contact with and reflection on the artworks will enable students to address technical methods, examine historical and cultural backgrounds, and understand the function and meaning of artworks throughout the centuries.
