DESCRIPTION

This module examines the emergence of criminology as a modern discipline within the context of the metanarratives of modernity and explores relationships with other social science disciplines.
This module examines the place of criminology as a field of enquiry in the history of
modernity. It aims to:
? examine the social, political and intellectual conditions within which the discipline emerged and has been sustained.
? explore how criminology as a field has been constituted by drawing on intellectual developments within the adjacent human sciences and the relationships between criminology and narratives of progress in the era of modernity.
? examine how and why in recent years the key narratives of criminology and criminal justice policy have been subject to increasing scepticism and how it might benefit from theoretical engagement with intellectual developments in the contemporary human sciences
