DESCRIPTION

Whether in fiction or in journalism, writing requires the ability to portray place in all its power and diversity. Each place has its own essence, a landscape of memory, imagination and experience that transforms with every new character, real or imaginary, who passes through it. Even ordinary places, when skillfully captured or created in prose and reporting, can become compelling characters in their own right. Through studying the treatment of place by both journalists and authors and developing our own work through group and individual exercises, this workshop is designed to explore the pleasure and power of crafting place whether in fiction, memoir, articles or essays.
