DESCRIPTION

How do the legacies of Mediterranean art history and artistic practices continue to shape and inform contemporary artists today? In this seminar, we connect the region's rich artistic past with modern visual culture. Through hands-on research, writing, and discussion, students will explore both the historical traditions and current creative practices of the Mediterranean. Drawing on collections from institutions such as MUCEM in Marseille, MACBA in Barcelona, and the Marrakech Museum of Contemporary Art, we will analyze how older art forms influence today's work. Each session combines critical discussions with focused research on artists and galleries. Our major project is the creation of a collaborative digital map that profiles contemporary artists and institutions, illustrating their historical foundations and ongoing impact in the Mediterranean art world.
