DESCRIPTION

The Mediterranean, home to the most renowned ancient civilizations such as the Greeks and Romans, is a region with intricate environmental and human histories. These histories have been dynamic and unstable in many ways, but with periods of relative stability when infamous cultures and civilizations have developed. This course will delve into these significant developments, providing you with a deeper understanding of the relationships between people and the environment in the Mediterranean. The course adopts a 'landscape approach', which evaluates the background to the development of Mediterranean landscapes, focusing on how human societies have shaped and been shaped by their environments. It then considers how people have exploited and managed their environments from the prehistoric periods to the end of the Roman Empire.
