DESCRIPTION
Latin America is a vast territory marked by diversity and inequality. This course will look at how social, ethnic, and gender subjectivities have been expressed and negotiated at the popular level, contributing to creating vibrant and powerful counter-hegemonic cultural productions. We will use literary texts, documentary films, and music, to approach some of the central issues and themes that have shaped Latin America?s past and present, like colonialism, exploitation, revolution, and political violence. We will further engage with some of these topics through experiential learning activities throughout the city. Music and religion have traditionally been - and still are - spaces of power that visible the needs, demands and aspirations of social actors that have been marginalized from the historical process. This course will allow us to engage with their voices to understand their importance and their contributions to the culture of Latin America.
