DESCRIPTION

This course offers students an introductory view of noteworthy American authors, literary movements and works from the Colonial period through to the Nineteenth century. Among the authors included in this course are William Bradford, Anne Bradstreet, Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry David Thoreau, Frederick Douglass, Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman and Henry James. Students are required to read all the set texts and to become familiar with the historical, philosophical or cultural contexts from which they emerged.

Course will consist of 60hrs of in class work and 90 hrs of independent work outside the classroom.
