DESCRIPTION

In this subject students will acquire a general knowledge of organic chemistry required for their formation as chemist. A comprehensive review of Organic Chemistry will be done by functional groups order. For each function, general concepts would be introduced and the differences between the different types of reactions, such as additions, substitutions, deletions, oxidations and reductions would be established. Like this, the student will link reactions that have common characteristics, building a mind map encompassing and simplifying all processes by grouping them by type. The student should learn the different functional groups in organic molecules, their nomenclature, reactions in which they participate and the related mechanisms. The student must be able to apply the concepts, principles and theories in which organic chemistry is based, to solve problems and give a proper interpretation and evaluation of experimental facts. During this course, students must acquire the necessary experience for the synthesis and purification of organic compounds, paying attention to the safe use and handling of reagents and equipment in the laboratory. Finally, students should be also able to study, plan and face their learning activities individually and in groups, using all literature resources.

Course will consist of 60hrs of in class work and 90 hrs of independent work outside the classroom.

Course includes a lab component.
