DESCRIPTION
Growth in knowledge has been main driver of increases in per capita income over the past 300 years, but has also changed the organization of society and has put pressure on natural resources. Major questions are why countries grow, why growth rates differ between countries and over time and how economic growth can be reconciled with societal wellbeing and environmental sustainability. These questions will be analysed by studying the main theoretical models as well as by relating empirical data to theory.
The course starts with a series of lectures on Growth Theory, providing a theoretical and conceptual basis for exploring the major growth related questions of today?s society. Subsequently three of those major growth related questions, namely on sources of growth, green growth and inclusive growth will be addressed. Throughout the course theoretical models will be confronted with empirical data.
Contact hours listed under a course description may vary due to the combination of lecture-based and independent work required for each course therefore, CEA's recommended credits are based on the ECTS credits assigned by VU Amsterdam. 1 ECTS equals 28 contact hours assigned by VU Amsterdam.
