DESCRIPTION
This module is designed to develop awareness of and critical responses to contemporary performance in London in a range of venues from large stages to intimate ones.
You will be introduced to a wide range of performance practices and spaces. Background lectures introduce semiotics, performance sign systems and strategies for phenomenological analysis, as well as their application to the critical and contextual analysis of performance. Throughout the module you will explore key concepts in the production of meaning with regard to the different performance styles, and the different conditions of performance making.
The wider context of each performance will be discussed in order to enable the students to understand contemporary theatre as a result of certain historical processes; we will discuss the interrelations between the city and performance venues as a means to understand the material conditions that define the production of theatre and the production of meaning. The work of companies and individuals is explored in relation to cultural and sexual politics, interculturalism, globalization, and new technologies.
