DESCRIPTION

Some of the main problems concerning human beings and their place in the universe as discussed in a selection of classic philosophical texts from Greek antiquity through the early modern period. This course is intended as an introduction to the traditional philosophical questions, themes and concepts, from the ancients through modernity, which have shaped Western civilization. The general branches of philosophy will be introduced (epistemology, ontology, metaphysics, theology, ethics, etc.) along with the traditional methods of logical reasoning and argumentation. Students will be encouraged to discuss the course readings in an open and informal classroom environment. Having been introduced to some of the most deeply significant philosophical questions of the Western tradition, and by gaining an increased familiarity with these questions, students will then begin to develop a proficiency for responding to these questions in a thoughtful and critically enlightened way.
