DESCRIPTION

Students will gain first-hand experience of the unique environmental issues that define South Africa. In Port Elizabeth and the Eastern Cape, students will see the juxtapositioning of the developed and developing world, and explore the challenges that this creates. Students will study South Africa's attempts to come to terms with her development whilst striving to conserve one of the most fascinating and biologically diverse, natural environments in the world.

During the programme some time will be spent in one or more of the Eastern Cape's famous game reserves. Students will also be exposed to the environmental issues around the marine ecology of the Eastern Cape visiting coastal areas around Port Elizabeth, such as the Woody Cape Nature Reserve and Bird Island. These trips will highlight the issues discussed in classes. Travel to other important environmental sites such as George and Knysna, located along South Africa's beautiful Garden Route will also be undertaken.
