DESCRIPTION
This course examines the relationship between the media and democracy with a particular emphasis on the new media technologies and their profound impact on the current, political processes worldwide.
We will begin with an overview of the traditional theories of the media's role in democracy and then will go on to investigate the effects of new communication technologies on the public sphere, media systems, democratic governance, and individual expression. Throughout the course we will study the French media system in depth, but we will also use various other worldwide empirical cases to understand how the media, and the new media technologies in particular, can enhance or undermine democratic processes.
The aim of this course is to familiarize students with different media systems and provide a thorough understanding of the media's role in democracy and its current challenges. Students will learn experientially by becoming citizen journalists themselves and researching and interacting with local players in Paris first-hand.
