DESCRIPTION
We have entered an urban age, where the majority of the world's population lives in urban areas. Whether living in cities or not, most of the world's population is impacted by the processes of urbanization. A more international approach to urban studies is emerging, recognizing the growing influence of Asian urban experiences and the challenges from urbanization to be found in some of the world's poorest countries. This module will introduce students to key debates and concepts in urban geography enabling students to develop a critical understanding of the contemporary city and urban conditions internationally. After establishing the historical and contemporary context of urbanization, some of the major urban conditions and challenges in the world today will be explored, using a variety of international case studies. Themes and topics will vary from year to year, but may include housing, regeneration, gentrification, public health, liveability and sustainability.
