DESCRIPTION
The course charts the development of the Fantasy short story in the context of 19th-century France, and focuses on defining the specificity of le fantastique in relation, for example, to fairy-tale and science-fiction stories. Through close readings of the set texts, and of excerpts of other key texts, students will identify the various functions played by characters, supernatural elements, setting & context, and certain readerly responses such as doubt and hesitation. Students also consider in detail the impact of genre on Fantasy and become familiar with the major critical assessments & theories, advocated by, among others, Castex, Caillois and Todorov.
