DESCRIPTION

Technologies are critical tools to defend rights and hold powerful actors to account. But technology can also be used in ways that curtail rights. This course will begin with a short crash course on international human rights law. We will focus on how from a practical perspective technology can be used to move the human rights agenda forward. The course delves into four areas of human rights practice namely: investigations and fact-finding; strategic litigation; advocacy; and human rights online monitoring and how they interact with technology. You will complete the course by exploring polycentric approaches to human rights realisation involving a multiplicity of actors replacing the State-centric one. This course is linked to the Justice and Legal Technology Clinic.

Contact hours listed under a course description may vary due to the combination of lecture-based and independent work required for each course therefore, CEA's recommended credits are based on the ECTS credits assigned by VU Amsterdam. 1 ECTS equals 28 contact hours assigned by VU Amsterdam.
