DESCRIPTION

In this survey course, students will learn to distinguish and understand the different artistic and architectural styles that Seville has to offer. Exploring Seville's monuments and UNESCO World Heritage sites, from antiquity to modern times, this course will trace a general overview of Seville's rich history and introduce students to the appropriate tools and terminology to conduct a visual analysis of artworks and buildings.

Students will chronologically explore artistic representations from the native cultures of the Iberian Peninsula as well as significant examples of Classical Christian art and Muslim art (Almohad-style), elements of which are still visible in Seville today. They will further delve into Mudéjar art, Gothic art, Baroque masterpieces, Romanticism, Costumbrismo, and the accompanying aesthetic marks these styles have left on the city.

Special attention will be dedicated to the decisive periods in the formation of Seville's unique identity, against the backdrop of key historical moments, quagmires of contradictions and social challenges.
