DESCRIPTION

Contemporary and historical examples from a variety of domains (socio-political, business, and others) have shown us that leadership, although often presented in a positive light, can also be a negative force by virtue of the influence leaders exercise on followers. In this module we explore the concept of leadership from a critical perspective to expose both its positive and not so positive side. Further, recent events have demonstrated the power of the followers. They have revealed that followership need not be defined as blind obedience. Rather, it could be perceived as co-creation or collective initiative toward achieving a certain objective. Therefore, in this module we explore the emerging paradigms of followership from recent literature. Finally, we question the need to have the leader-follower dichotomy, and explore the possibility of more egalitarian and participative relations in the workplace.
