DESCRIPTION

Budapest is introduced from the perspective of urban space usage. The majority of the course takes place off-campus, in Budapest in the form of weekly themed guided tours (approximately 10-11), whilst the remainder of the course is classroom based (3-4). The tours involve approximately 1 1/2 hours walking outside, travelling using public transport and inside lectures. Subjects include cultural heritage sites, museums, galleries, baths, churches, bridges parks, etc. Students have the opportunity of experiencing and understanding the cultural, historical, ideological, social complexities of Budapest through the guided tours and discussions.

The course provides an overview of the history of Budapest and looks at the various aspects of city life (be it art, architecture, music, urban lifestyles, ideological debates or social inequalities reflected in the urban space). Class participation requires occasional entrance fee payment (approx. 30 USD, subject to change). We will wait no more than 5-8 minutes before we start the class, and the walking tours. Please be aware, if you arrive later, you will miss that class! Public transport pass and student ID are essential to be able to attend this course.

This course cannot be taken concurrently with Budapest in the Twentieth Century: Historical Layers and Cultural Practice.
