DESCRIPTION
The instructor shares her lifelong first-hand experience with Prague´s rich cultural resistance. The course starts with the Czech underground during the Communist regime, discussing its music and literature. The majority of the analysis is dedicated to post-1989 phenomena such as graffiti and street art, LGBTQ, political art collectives and culture jamming, new social movements, psychedelia, D.I.Y. music scenes, and other elements of Prague´s non-mainstream culture It examines critical theory to discuss the practices of "alternative" urban lives in postindustrial society and certain trends of artistic production. The focus is on the political interpretation of youth subversion and disclosures of power mechanisms. Visuals and field trips to graffiti and other subcultural sites are an inherent part of this course.
