DESCRIPTION

This painting course will introduce the student to the basic concepts and techniques of painting landscapes from observation while also introducing the student to related expressive painting methods. This is a multi-level course, which can accommodate beginners as well as those with painting experience. There are no prerequisites.

The course will begin with lectures and demonstrations on style and technique, starting with drawing and the organizing and structuring of compositions. We will then work mostly plein air (painting outdoors) in the gardens of our immediate surroundings. Because of our unique location in Prague, we will, of course, include the motifs of Baroque architecture and Baroque gardens.

Once the basic principals of landscape painting are covered, we will devote the second part of the course to developing expressive painting techniques. Students will work primarily from the observation of nature and depicting the effects of light, but should also be inspired stylistically by the specific Expressionist traditions of Central European art. The premise is that the Central Europe of Prague and Vienna developed according to its own history and artistic heritage, which sometimes differed from the cultures of other European capitals and regions. This can be a valuable source of inspiration for the contemporary artist.
