DESCRIPTION
The media plays a significant role in the social construction of gender. Looking into the gendered representations in the media enables us to critically analyze issues of power and control in society. This course introduces students to the major discussions in gender studies and their interactions with issues of meaning making and representation in contemporary media culture. During the course, we will first look into the key concepts and major debates in gender studies, and then establish their links with the main debates in media studies. In the following sessions, we will focus on the representations of gender identities, and locate the analysis of representations within contexts of consumerism, digitalization and the political economy of media industries.
