This unit will explore the cultural, historical and material factors that contributed to the importance of Neorealist films in post-war Italian cinema - one of the most influential film movements in cinema history. Students will analyze a range of Neorealist films in relation to their cultural and historical context, and place them within critical debates on film form, national cinema and identities. It will go on to chart the demise of Neorealism and the corresponding development of Italian Art cinema, the latter seen in terms of both continuation and rupture from the former.
