DESCRIPTION
This unit extends students' understanding of journalism as an object of analysis and critique, through a theoretically-informed exploration of current issues and debates in journalism studies. It is intended that the content of this unit remain relatively open in order to be able to respond to topics of current concern, but the overall framework for the unit is an examination of the relationship between journalism as a professional practice and as an object of academic study. Issues addressed could include: trivialization, privacy and the public interest, objectivity and the outsourcing of authority, reporting the environment, war reporting and propaganda.
