DESCRIPTION

The question of how the mind is related to the body, also known as the "mind-body problem", is one of the most important problems in philosophy. In this introductory course we will discuss the main positions regarding this problem (substance dualism, behaviorism, identity theory, functionalism, eliminativism, interpretivism, embodied cognition). Additionally we will consider some questions that are closely associated with the mind-body problem. What is consciousness? How do we understand others? Do we have free will? What can the sciences tell us about the human mind?

Contact hours listed under a course description may vary due to the combination of lecture-based and independent work required for each course therefore, CEA's recommended credits are based on the ECTS credits assigned by VU Amsterdam. 1 ECTS equals 28 contact hours assigned by VU Amsterdam.
