DESCRIPTION
English has become the leading language for international communication. The ratio of native- versus non-native speakers is currently 1:4, and it is estimated that around 80% of all communication in English takes place amongst non-native speakers with different mother tongues. This course discusses core concepts in spoken language and applies these concepts to the use of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). The course also addresses some sociolinguistic issues related to ELF and reflects on pratical implications of the emergence of ELF, for example, in language teaching.
Contact hours listed under a course description may vary due to the combination of lecture-based and independent work required for each course therefore, CEA's recommended credits are based on the ECTS credits assigned by VU Amsterdam. 1 ECTS equals 28 contact hours assigned by VU Amsterdam.
