DESCRIPTION
This course tracks the history of British literature chronologically, from the First World War and the height of the British Empire to the multicultural voices from contemporary Britain. It seeks to understand how authors reflect on the trials and tribulations of the twentieth century, when Britain stops being a daunting world power with colonies around the globe and needs to adjust to a more humble role. We examine relevant cultural and literary contexts, including modernism, postmodernism, and postcolonialism against their respective historical backdrop.
Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) awards credits based on the ECTS system. Contact hours listed under a course description may vary due to the combination of lecture-based and independent work required for each course therefore, CEA?s recommended credits are based on the ECTS credits assigned by VU Amsterdam. 1 ECTS equals 28 contact hours assigned by VU Amsterdam.
