DESCRIPTION

Is it wrong to buy products made in exploitative conditions, or to fail to reduce our carbon emissions? And even when such acts are wrong, should we be held responsible for them? This course is organized in two corresponding parts.

In part one, we will address the collective action problem, namely the problem that certain outcomes (such as climate change) are insensitive to the behaviour of individuals, and yet it is plausible to think that the latter should do their part and cooperate. In response to this problem, we will examine some main theories from Ethics (year 1) in greater detail, including Kant?s formulas and variants of consequentialism.

In part two, we will examine the debate on whether and when agents are morally responsible. We will discuss various compatibilist views (according to which we can be responsible even if determinism is true), and also address the tricky topic of moral luck.

In this course, you will also work on your research and writing skills (needed for a Bachelor thesis in practical philosophy).

Contact hours listed under a course description may vary due to the combination of lecture-based and independent work required for each course therefore, CEA's recommended credits are based on the ECTS credits assigned by VU Amsterdam. 1 ECTS equals 28 contact hours assigned by VU Amsterdam.
