DESCRIPTION

The focus of this course will be the roles played by Christians, Muslims and Jews in the formation of medieval Spain since the Islamic invasion of 711 to the fall of Granada in 1492. Topics covered include the construction of Spain since the invasion of the Muslims in 711, the expulsion of the Jews in 1492 and the end of tolerance, and the appearance of the "Frontier" and its territorial evolution until the reign of Fernando and Isabel. The class will also probe the problems that arose in socio-cultural relations of everyday life in this cohabitation of three cultures. The class is combined with readings, lectures, and visits to historical centers representing the three cultures.
