DESCRIPTION
This course studies the political history of Latin America, from the 19th century, which has been characterized by a continuous search for political-institutional stability in each of its nations. To this respect, there is no doubt the fragility of the political system of Latin America is due to structural factors that are basically related to socioeconomic and cultural elements. Thereafter, there are caudillist, populist or dictatorial responses that make democracy much more difficult to implement as a form of permanent coexistence in Latin American societies. In this scenario, it is easy to observe in the region mixed opinions on the role the State should have and its relation to the individual, that is, the presence of an extreme liberalism (always associated to the right) opposed to a state interventionism (of the left) that recall the ideological struggles of the Cold War.
