The past several years have been challenging for the field of education abroad. The global environments in which we work have become more complex, unstable, and potentially less hospitable to our endeavors. The pandemic, new technologies, and political upheaval have called into question many of our deeply held assumptions about pedagogy, curriculum, student mobility, and education as a collective enterprise, provoking us to reexamine the philosophical, political, and theoretical interpretations underlying our work. The essays in this volume examine the ways in which neoliberal, utilitarian, and colonialist assumptions intersect to constrain our field, and explore new ways of unlocking its transformative potential. The authors highlight a diverse array of alternatives to the status quo, showcasing bold visions of the future of our field and creative approaches to programmatic design which are testament to the energy and dynamism of education abroad in the third decade of the twenty-first century.
