Seville, Spain

Why did you choose to study or intern abroad?
Ever since I was young, I dreamed of studying abroad. Travel, cultural immersion, and creating cross-cultural connections have become fundamental aspects of who I am. I have never been to Spain, and while the idea of moving somewhere I’ve never been somewhat scares me, it equally excites me. I have studied Spanish on and off since middle school, but this past summer I spent over two months working as a Project Supervisor for Amigos de las Américas, leading environmental conservation service trips in Costa Rica. This transformational experience reignited my curiosity to learn Spanish and strengthened my love for learning about and immersing myself in new cultures. By choosing Seville, I will be able to practice my Spanish authentically, immerse myself in a new culture and community, and push myself out of my comfort zone.

WhAT IS ONE NEW EXPERIENCE YOU'RE HOPING TO HAVE WHILE ABROAD?
While I am abroad, I hope to participate in a local festival or celebration, so I am able to experience the vibrant cultural expressions and traditions of my host community. Since I am spending my spring semester in Seville, I am looking forward to attending both Feria de Abril and Semana Santa.

What CLASS ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO TAKING while ABROAD?
I am most looking forward to taking the class "Seville: Culture, Identity & Citizenship in the City." I am excited to have the opportunity to learn about Seville in a classroom setting and really delve into the intricacies of this incredible city. I’ll then be able to apply my learning through my day-to-day experiences outside of the classroom and fully take in everything Seville has to offer.

WHAT IS SOMETHING you're passionate and excited about?
15 years of twirling through the ballet studio gave me a deep appreciation for dance and an ever-growing curiosity to learn about the performing art in different cultures. Seville is known for its flamenco presence, and I plan to take advantage of this during my time abroad. Whether it be attending a flamenco show in the Plaza de España or participating in classes myself, I am excited to experience the rich cultural presence of flamenco.
