WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE CLASS WHILE ABROAD, AND WHY? (IF YOU INTERNED ABROAD YOU CAN USE THIS SPACE TO TELL US ABOUT YOUR INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE IF YOU PREFER)
My favorite class abroad was definitely Food & Culture - which I actually took through CEA CAPA and not my partner institution (though I did love those classes as well!). I think, for me at least, this class was the most interactive and most allowed us to explore the city. We not only learned about the Mediterranean Diet, but learned about the economic and social feasibility of markets and their impact on local food traditions. Excursions and tastings enhanced our learning, and the professor was both knowledgable and fun!
WHAT'S ONE STORY OR IMPORTANT ASPECT YOU ALWAYS TELL PEOPLE ABOUT YOUR TIME ABROAD?
Something I always emphasize is finding organic ways to interact with the local community. In addition to embracing cafe culture (I love a good latte), I am an avid reader. For me, another way I interacted with the community was visiting local libraries and book shops and getting to know the individuals who worked there, as well as the other shoppers. I think that beyond more structured forms of community engagement (such as through the institutions you're partnered with - and believe me, they're amazing as well!) people downplay their own hobbies in favor of embracing local tradition. While that is important for cultural immersion, I like to remind people that they don't have to put their own hobbies on hold to embrace new ones, but can find ways to incorporate their own hobbies into their new lifestyle abroad.
