HOW
DID YOU ENGAGE WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY WHILE ABROAD?
When I was attending Corvinus University, I got the opportunity to speak with local students everyday I went to the school. In every class I attended there was at least one Hungarian student, and in one of my classes, I was the only international student! I also explored around the city often when I got antsy in my room. I loved to grab a book, go on the metro, and ride it until in hit the end of the line. Then I would start to make my journey back again, sometimes making langos (a popular street food) detours along the way. In addition to this, even though it was not my strong suit, I always tried my best to speak Hungarian to the local market workers. It's a difficult language to learn on my own, I definitely recommend taking a language course wherever you go!
WHAT'S ONE STORY OR IMPORTANT ASPECT YOU ALWAYS TELL PEOPLE ABOUT YOUR TIME ABROAD?
It will never be what you expect when you go abroad, but that doesn't mean it won't be as meaningful. My study abroad experience did not go as I thought it would, and I was in a negative mindset for awhile. But one day, I opened my window on a freezing day in Budapest, and realized... I'M IN EUROPE!!! I could go anywhere I want in Europe for less than $50, and eat all the best foods it has to offer. I could see some of the most historically significant art pieces, and visit some of the oldest castles in the world. The opportunities are endless abroad, you just need to be open to seeing them all!
