WHAT'S ONE STORY OR IMPORTANT ASPECT YOU ALWAYS TELL PEOPLE ABOUT YOUR TIME ABROAD?
I often could not understand what locals were saying due to their accents, but I did my best to try and listen carefully or ask people to speak slowly. Once, I was completely unable to comprehend what a client was saying, until my supervisor told me that he was speaking Irish! I then learned a little bit of the Irish language, which was extremely helpful, as many signs have both Irish and English writing on them. It got to the point where I had a stranger ask me for directions!
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE CLASS WHILE ABROAD, AND WHY? (IF YOU INTERNED ABROAD YOU CAN USE THIS SPACE TO TELL US ABOUT YOUR INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE IF YOU PREFER)
While I was in Dublin, Ireland, I interned at Coolmine Lodge, an addiction recovery treatment residential facility. I facilitated group sessions and taught workshops on topics such as behavior interventions, relapse prevention, orientation, quit smoking seminars, and mindfulness. I was trained on the methods of community reinforcement approach family therapy, reshaping cognitive behavioral patterns, dynamics of addiction, and client case conceptualization. I also adapted to Irish communication styles and norms, increasing cultural intelligence and competency.
