Health and Safety
CEA CAPA's top priority is the health and safety of our students, but you are ultimately responsible for your own health and well-being. Please review the information below to ensure you are prepared for your trip!
Pre-Departure
- Complete the Required Health Information, found on your To-Do List in your MyCEA Account. This task is mandatory and is an important step to ensure CEA CAPA staff are aware of any assistance you might require during your experience abroad
- Read the CEA CAPA Health and Safety Handbook, found on the Resource Downloads page in your MyCEA Account to review CEA CAPA's health and safety advising. We encourage you to share this document with your loved ones who you list as your emergency contacts.
- Visit the website for the Centers for Disease Control at wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel and review the latest health advisories, recommendations, requirements and warnings for the country and areas in which you plan to study and travel.
- Make an appointment with your primary health provider. During your appointment,
discuss the following:
- Any health advisories or warnings from the CDC website.
- Any medical and/or psychological conditions you've experienced within the last 10 years, including substance abuse and depression. Remember, travel can exacerbate current symptoms and/or cause past conditions to resurface.
- Any allergies or dietary sensitivities, and what to do if you experience a reaction.
- Whether you have your physician's approval (and your therapist's approval, if applicable) to travel abroad.
- Whether your physician and/or therapist advises you to seek follow-up care while abroad. If so, request copies of your medical records to take with you.
- If you will be taking prescription medications with you
- Request a letter from your doctor on letterhead, detailing what each medication is and why you are taking it.
- Request enough medication to last for your entire program. Medication usually cannot be shipped
internationally due to customs regulations, and your exact prescription usually cannot be
refilled abroad. See below for more tips on traveling with medications:
- When packing prescription medications:
- Keep medications in their original packaging and pack them in your carry-on bag.
- Keep your doctor's letter (detailed above) with the medications.
- Carry enough medication for the duration of your program.
- Ensure the emergency contact information in your MyCEA Account is accurate .
During Your Program
- Contact a member of the CEA CAPA program staff immediately if you want assistance in seeking medical or psychological services.
- Always leave a copy of your travel itinerary and contact information with a trusted person (i.e. CEA CAPA staff member, host family, roommate) when traveling independently during your program.
- Follow the advice and instructions provided during onsite program orientation for pertinent health and safety information.
